The Valencian tiger nut, a millenary treasure!

A tiger nut is an edible tuber considered a superfood due to its health benefits and its nutritional properties. It is one of the most representative crops of Valencia and is the main ingredient of horchata, a drink made by grinding tiger nuts with water and optionally sugar. Horchata is part of the Mediterranean diet and very popular in spring and summer all around Spain.

The Valencian tiger nut is a historical, gastronomic and cultural treasure, a thousand-year-old tuber worshipped by many cultures. It was considered sacred by the Egyptian pharaohs and praised by the ancient Arab, Persian and Chinese empires. There are documents written by Persian and Arab authors where tiger nuts were already mentioned for its healing properties and because of their digestive and antioxidant benefits.

The process of growing Valencian tiger nuts, takes a complete year and comprises three phases: the planting, curing and sorting.

Our tiger nuts with the designation of origin from Valencia come from the fields of the region of L’Horta Nord (the countryside north from Valencia) and are cultivated following the traditional techniques by farmers who have many years, and even generations, of experience. The relationship with our farmers comes from many years, its based in mutual trust and comprises the handling of seed and the purchase of their harvest.

At Chufas Bou we strive to acknowledge the work of local farmers, help to maintain their lifestyle and keep alive one of the most deeply rooted traditions of our culture.

In the sorting process, the best part of the harvest becomes part of our “Special Selection”, which includes two categories of great quality: the Granza and the Cosechero tiger nuts.

The Granza tiger nuts are the highest quality product because of its bigger size and yield when producing tiger nut beverages, hence its the choice for the most reputable horchata artisans in the country.

Sharing the same process as our Granza, the Cosechero has the same quality but it is differentiated by its slightly smaller size and, therefore, a lower yield when producing horchata.

It is recommended to store Valencian tiger nuts in a cool and dry place, being the ideal temperature below 8ºC and always must be kept away from direct sunlight. The low temperature will prevent pantry pests and the dryness will prevent mould or bad taste developing.

Our Valencian tiger nuts, if correctly kept, can have a best before date of two years from their packaging date.
